This is one of the stories we hear when customers call to jump start a car in El Cajon.
Whey Jumper Cables Doesn’t Always Work
To give a battery jump to another car with dead battery you need jumper cables and a place to park close to the disable car. To connect jumper lead you will have to align cars front to front or side to side in order reach positive and negative terminals on both cars. If both cars has similar size engines and batteries then charging with cables for 15 to 20 minutes should be enough to jump start a dead battery. In most cases a jump from another vehicle will work. In those times when it doesn’t give us a call.
Jumper cables would not work if:
- Car has not been used in several weeks or longer
- Battery has high internal resistance and does not accept charge
- There is no room for another vehicle to park
- Dead car has larger engine than a running vehicle

How To Tell If You Need a Jump Or A New Battery
In case your vehicle does not start after jump starting it and it appears that there is more severe problem we will gladly arrange towing service and recommend qualified repair shop to get it repaired.
Common car break-downs, that mimic low battery charge are failed starter, anti-theft alarm and failed alternator or problem in charging system.
Failed engine starter acts and sounds like a dead battery.
When you first try to start the car. When starting the engine you will hear a single click similar like a weak battery would sound. You could do a test little test to see if it is your battery that’s not letting you to start or you have broken starter. Turn on your headlights and check if they look dimmer than usual. Another indicator could be your door windows, pay attention if glass goes up and down slow and sluggish. If none of these symptoms are present and your car just makes clicking sound when starting you may have failed starter. To find out if this is the case you still want to try a battery jump start first before you tow your car for repairs.
Anti-theft Alarm may prevent car from starting.
In some cases a low car battery may reset or confuse vehicles security alarm and immobilizer system and trigger a false theft signal. Broken car alarm remote or key fob may send misleading signals to anti-theft module as well. Some vehicles with triggered security alarm may block ignition switch and prevent vehicle from starting.
To reset and disable car alarm you should press unlock button on key fob or insert ignition key in to driver door lock and turn “LOCK to UNLOCK” and then try to start. Some vehicles may have aftermarket alarm installed in the car and to switch it off may take different procedures. Check your guide on how to reset your car alarm.
Failed alternator or relay may be a cause for your car not starting.
With problem in your cars charging system there can be two ways you will find out that there is something wrong with your vehicle.
- Vehicle would not start even after a very short stop
- Your car would start act strange while in driving (radio and gauges would flicker, dim lights, loss of power) and eventually vehicle would stall and not restart.
- After jump starting a car with failed alternator it would only stay running with auxiliary power leads attached. As soon you will disconnect jumper cables vehicle will sputter and engine will turn off. Battery jump start will not help and you will need to tow your vehicle to a local repair shop.
